  • Martínez opted against surgery to ensure his participation in the World Cup.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez has confirmed that he is living with a permanent injury to his right hand. In an interview with Argentine journalist Gaston Edul, the 2022 World Cup winner and 2026 runner-up stated that one of his fingers will never return to its normal state.

The issue stems from a fracture sustained in May while playing for Aston Villa in the Europa League final. Martínez explained that while surgery would have corrected the damage, he chose not to undergo the procedure at the time to prioritize his availability for the World Cup. As a result, the goalkeeper is no longer able to fully close his right hand.
