Estudiantes de La Plata secured their spot in the Copa Libertadores final by defeating Flamengo 3-2 on penalties. Following a goalless draw in Buenos Aires, the two sides played to another 0-0 stalemate at the Maracanã on Thursday.
Estudiantes manager Alexander Cacique Medina labeled the victory a new "Maracanazo," while the Argentine press described the result as a historic and heroic feat. Flamengo failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage for most of the second half.
Flamengo coach Leonardo Jardim expressed his frustration over the elimination. Midfielder Arrascaeta, returning after more than a month out with a shoulder fracture, appeared off the bench and stated the team did not give their maximum effort. Jorginho missed his penalty kick during the shootout.
