Benfica Tops Europa League Standings After 4-1 Win Over Omonia
- Benfica recovered from a flat first half to secure a dominant victory in Cyprus.
- Goals from Pavlidis, Aursnes, and Prestianni followed an early lead via a Loic Nego own goal.
- The result places Marco Silva's side at the top of the Europa League table on goal difference.
Benfica secured a 4-1 victory against Omonia in Nicosia, overcoming a difficult start to move to the top of the Europa League standings. Despite an uninspired first half that ended in a 1-1 draw, the Portuguese side improved significantly after the interval. Echeverri, making his first start, saw his early header deflected in by Loic Nego, but Omonia equalized in the 42nd minute following a mistake by Alexander Bah.
In the second half, Vangelis Pavlidis restored the lead before Fredrik Aursnes capitalized on a defensive error to score the third. The final goal came after a 60-meter run by Dodi Lukebakio, which allowed Gianluca Prestianni to finish from close range. Manager Marco Silva praised the team's reaction and emphasized the importance of finishing in the top eight to avoid additional playoff matches.
The win leaves Benfica level on points with four other teams but leading the competition due to their superior goal tally. Midfielder Manu Silva also made his return to action after more than two months. Captain Aursnes noted that while leading is positive, the team must now focus on their upcoming difficult fixture in the Azores.
