Uruguayan football has implemented a 'virtual card' system during a Copa del Uruguay match. The technology made its debut on Thursday during the round of 16 encounter between Nacional and Rentistas, which resulted in a 3-0 victory for Nacional.
Instead of carrying physical yellow and red cards, referee Eduardo Varela utilized an electronic device resembling a mobile phone. To issue a card, the official presses a button on the device to indicate whether the caution or dismissal is for a yellow or red offense.
Rentistas midfielder Juan Pablo Plada became the first player to be booked using this electronic method.
