Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has released a statement clarifying his recent strong criticism of the club's hierarchy. The Argentine international had publicly voiced his displeasure following the team's disappointing 0-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday. Despite issuing the clarification, Martinez's statement notably did not include an apology for his initial remarks.
Martinez's original comments, which reportedly targeted Manchester United's leadership, came in the immediate aftermath of their Champions League exit. His direct approach and the nature of his criticism drew significant attention, prompting the subsequent explanation from the player designed to elaborate on his earlier words.
According to reports in Sky Sports Papers, senior players within the Manchester United squad are understood to be supportive of Martinez following his public outburst. This suggests a potential alignment of sentiment regarding the club's direction among some team members, indicating a broader discussion might be taking place internally.
While Martinez's own defensive performances this season have faced scrutiny, including high-profile errors in matches against Fulham and Tottenham, his criticism has been interpreted by some observers as exposing fundamental problems at the club. Commentators suggest his remarks cut to the core of what has gone wrong at Manchester United, potentially touching upon issues related to the club's ownership and overall structure.
