  • FIFA penalized the Spanish federation following discriminatory chants directed at Egypt.
  • The incidents occurred during an international friendly match played on March 31.
  • Spain must pay a fine and close part of their stadium for the next home friendly.

FIFA has sanctioned the Spanish Football Federation with a fine of 20,000 dollars and a partial stadium closure for an upcoming home friendly fixture. The disciplinary action stems from discriminatory chants directed at Egypt by supporters during an international friendly encounter.

The match took place on March 31 at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, ending in a goalless draw. According to BBC Sport, fans repeatedly sang a discriminatory chant about Muslims during the fixture. The ruling was issued in August and became public following the rejection of an appeal lodged by Spain.
